Protecting Aruba's Sea Turtles on Eagle Beach

Eagle Beach, renowned for its powdery white sands and turquoise waters, is a paradise for sun-seekers and a sanctuary for one of nature’s most ancient marvels: sea turtles. Here at Amsterdam Manor Beach Resort, we’re honored to share our slice of paradise with these gentle creatures. This season, we’re thrilled to announce that a sea turtle nest has been spotted right along our stretch of Eagle Beach, a reminder of the magic that unfolds when humans and nature coexist harmoniously.

The Miracle of Turtle Nesting on Eagle Beach:
Every year, between March and September, endangered sea turtles like hawksbills, loggerheads, and leatherbacks return to the shores of Aruba to lay their eggs. Eagle Beach, with its soft sand and quiet ambiance, provides the perfect nesting ground. This year, a nest has been discovered near Amsterdam Manor, offering guests and staff a rare opportunity to witness the circle of life in action.

These turtles travel thousands of miles to return to their birthplace, digging deep nests to protect their eggs from predators. After roughly 60 to 70 days, tiny hatchlings emerge, guided by moonlight to begin their journey into the ocean. It’s a delicate process, one that requires patience, respect, and protection.

Sound familiar? Much like our turtles, many of our guests feel a deep connection to Eagle Beach, returning year after year to recharge, reconnect, and create new memories.

Amsterdam Manor’s Connection to Conservation:
At Amsterdam Manor, we don’t just celebrate Aruba’s natural beauty we actively work to preserve it. Our resort is deeply committed to sustainability and eco-friendly practices, which align with the island’s broader efforts to protect sea turtles. Here’s how we’re involved:

  • Nest Monitoring: We collaborate with local organizations like Turtugaruba (Aruba’s sea turtle conservation foundation) to report nests, monitor their progress, and ensure they remain undisturbed.
  • Guest Education: Through our Web App and informational signage, we educate visitors about the importance of keeping beaches clean, avoiding bright lights at night (which disorient hatchlings), and respecting marked nesting areas.
  • Eco-Conscious Practices: From reducing plastic use to organizing beach cleanups once a month, our resort’s sustainability initiatives help maintain Eagle Beach as a safe haven for turtles.

How You Can Help (While Enjoying Your Stay!):

  • Keep Your Distance: Admire nests from afar and avoid touching markers or protective grids.
  • Lights Out: Close curtains at night and avoid using flashlights on the beach during nesting season.
  • Leave No Trace: Dispose of trash properly, plastic waste and fishing debris are major threats to marine life.
